A 1.6-acre site in Grand Rapids’ Belknap Lookout neighborhood will soon be replaced by a combination of multifamily and retail buildings.
Local company Orion Construction and its development arm, Orion Real Estate Solutions, have completed cleaning up the construction site—which called for razing 12 homes north of Hastings Street NE between Clancy and Coit avenues—and will break ground next week on the Gateway at Belknap project.
Located at 500 Coit Ave. and overlooking the Medical Line, the 98,471-square-foot community will include a three-story building with 88 market-rate apartments in a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units.
Project plans designed by local architecture studio Concept Design also include 6,500 square feet of restaurant space on the ground floor, 5,000 square feet of street-level retail space, and surface parking for more than 130 vehicles. As reported by the Grand Rapids Business Journal, the restaurant will be owned and operated by Meritage Hospitality Group.
The Gateway at Belknap community is scheduled for completion in fall 2016.
Belknap Lookout is a primarily residential area overlooking the Medical Line, a rapidly-expanding medical industry corridor populated by clinical, research and academic institutions such as the Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, the Van Andel Research Institute, Grand Valley State University’s Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences, and Spectrum Health System’s Butterworth Hospital and Meijer Heart Center.
