Metro Atlanta Leads Trending Suburbs for Renters
Six of the nation’s top 20 most popular, fastest-growing suburbs are located in the area, according to a recent RENTCafé study.
Looking into renter population changes between 2011 and 2016, as well as rent changes between 2014 and 2018, RENTCafé analysts highlighted the most popular suburbs for renters. The study found that, out of the 20 top trending suburbs, six are in Georgia.
The Atlanta metro is home to six of the top 20 trending suburbs in the U.S. for renters, with Chamblee occupying the number one spot, given its fast growth in the number of renters. The coveted suburb added 156 percent more renters to its population during the five-year period. Due to increased popularity and a lack of rental apartment supply, Chamblee rent prices went up by 43.6 percent, reaching $1,413 in 2018.
Norcross’ pool of renters went up by a staggering 148 percent, the second highest increase in the top 20, leading to a 38.4 percent bump in the average rent. However, apartments in Norcross cost renters an average of $1,057 per month, which is still considerably more affordable than Atlanta apartments that go for $1,423/month. Despite the high increase in its renter population, the suburb witnessed its renter income go down by an impressive 17 percent.
Clarkston takes the fifth spot in the top 20, with 97 percent more renters added to its population in the five-year period. Given the affordable average rent of $886/month, it’s easy to see why more and more people are leaving the city and relocating to this suburb. Compared to the other trending suburbs in Atlanta metro, Clarkston saw the highest increase in its renters’ median incomes, of 4 percent.
Johns Creek and Lilburn also boasted notable increases in the number of renters, of 79 percent and 67 percent, respectively. It’s important to point out that Lilburn renters saw their median incomes go down by 17 percent, from 61,536 in 2011 to 51,079 in 2016, one of the highest decreases in the top.
Upping its renter population by 66 percent between 2011 and 2016, Jonesboro concludes the list of Atlanta metro suburbs featured in the top 20 trending suburbs for renters.
