How do you balance a nice apartment aesthetic with fitting in all your furniture and knickknacks?

Apartments usually come with some amenities included. But when you move in, you usually bring with you other items that take up valuable space. And, unless you’re buying an $88 million apartment, space is usually at a premium.
Of course, there are always ways to make everything fit. For example, desks can be shoehorned in between the couch and bookcase. And closets can be left permanently open, their doors pinned to the wall behind night stands.
But then what do you do when you have company?
