Alkova’s High-Rise Takes Shape In Hackensack

Hackensack, N.J.—Construction has begun on the Alkova Cos. 328-unit high-rise tower project in downtown Hackensack, N.J., located in the heart of the 160-acre Redevelopment District. Located at 150-170 Main St., the tower will serve as the catalyst for the city’s revitalization, offering residents a place to live, shop and play.

“This project makes a bold statement that reinforces the concept behind the city’s entire redevelopment plan,” Barry Poskanzer, A.I.A., partner at Poskanzer Skott Architects, told MHN. “Tall and eye-catching, it will offer residents unparalleled views and in-demand amenities, as well as easy access to the new vitality of Main Street.”

Designed by Poskanzer Skott Architects, the property is being built on a 1.35-acre land that formerly housed seven buildings and a parking lot. The tower will offer a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom residences with amenities like a pool and rooftop garden, below-grade parking and 7,500 square feet of street-level retail space.

“The property will be defined by attractive, bright, efficiently laid out apartments with fabulous views of the Manhattan skyline and county courthouse,” said Barry Poskanzer, A.I.A., partner at Poskanzer Skott Architects. “From an architect’s standpoint, this type of semi-urban context, which calls for a strategic blend of traditional, walkable city amenities and suburban conveniences, provides us with an opportunity to be particularly creative.”

Poskanzer added that the city’s transformation, anchored by this Main Street development, stems from 2012 zoning changes intended to encourage redevelopment of high-rise residential in a transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. “150-170 Main Street is a pivotal piece of the revitalization plan and emblematic of the terms established by the city. It blends seamlessly with the urban fabric of the neighborhood, providing desirable, high-rise housing designed to draw people to downtown, supported by ground-level retail to stimulate growth and ample yet inconspicuous on-site parking,” he told MHN.

The project marks Poskanzer Skott’s first partnership with the Edison, N.J.-based Alkova, but the company has deep roots in the New Jersey multifamily market. Poskanzer Skott has designed thousands of units in the state with projects ranging from urban luxury towers to mid-rise neighborhood developments.
