83-Unit Affordable Housing Project Opens in San Francisco
After a decade in the making, 1036 Mission Street welcomed its first residents. Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corp. is the building’s owner, developer, service provider and property manager.

Local authorities and Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corp. have opened the doors of 1036 Mission Street, an 83-unit affordable housing property in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood. The development includes 40 units reserved for formerly homeless families. The City invested more than $19 million in the project.
Located at 1036 Mission St. in the Eastern San Francisco submarket, the eight-story property features an outdoor courtyard, a rooftop vegetable garden, a community room and kitchen, disability-accessible units, bicycle storage, 24-hour desk clerk and a public art installation by a local artist. According to Yardi Matrix data, the building also includes 963 square feet of retail space.
“Delayed, but not stymied by the Great Recession and 10 years in the making, 1036 Mission Street is a testament to perseverance and an entire community’s coming together to support affordable housing,” said Don Falk, CEO of Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corp., in prepared remarks.
Tenderloin is the owner, developer, service provider and property manager for the community. The State of California Department of Housing and Community Development, CHASE Community Development Banking, Enterprise Community Partners, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development provided additional funding to support the construction of 1036 Mission Street.
