Atlantic City, N.J.–Stafford Park Apartments, developed by Walters Group, won the Governor’s Excellence in Housing Award from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and New Jersey Housing and the Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA).
The residential project won in the category of Outstanding Affordable Housing Development. The annual award ceremony recognizes individuals and organizations that meet state needs and current housing goals. Stafford Park Apartments was recognized for its innovative concept and design.
“Once a site for serious environmental issues, we built Stafford Park Apartments to be sustainable, have aesthetic qualities and be affordable for the families who live there,” says Ed Walters, Jr., president and founder.
Stafford Park Apartments is part of a large scale, mixed-use redevelopment project, combining affordable housing with LEED and Energy Star certification. The complex represents the first LEED-Gold certified project in New Jersey of any residential type, according to the USGBC. Consequently, the project’s focus on energy efficiency has made it a model for “green” affordable housing development in the state. LEED is a rating system under which projects earn points for satisfying specific green building criteria.
The 112-unit development consists of five low-rise buildings, featuring a variety of one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts. Community amenities include a clubhouse with fitness center, washer/dryer in every unit, a tot lot playground, 24-hour on-site management and maintenance, and on-site parking.
