Bloomington-based StuartCo has reached an agreement with Simon Property Group, the owner of Southdale Center, to develop a 232-unit apartment project on an underused piece of land at the shopping center in Edina.
The Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal reports that StuartCo presented the plan and submitted sketches of the Residences at Southdale to the Edina Planning Commission. Before receiving city approval, the project will need to go through steps that include a parking and traffic study. Shopping center giant Simon Property Group will take charge of the city application process.
Initial designs of the project, located at the northwest corner of York Avenue South and 69th Street West, were conceived by Minneapolis-based BKV Group. The plan calls for the development of 10-, six- and three-story buildings. Amenities will include underground parking, a community room and a fitness facility. The project will benefit from a strong retail corridor that includes a SuperTarget, the Galleria and various other shopping centers.
StuartCo was founded in 1970 and currently owns 5,000 units in the Upper Midwest. The company is close to finalizing two projects in the Twin Cities area: the Genesee Apartments and Townhomes in Bloomington and the View at Long Lake in Brighton. Genesee, a 152-unit mixed-use development, broke ground in 2011 and will feature 14,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space. The View is a 124-unit apartment community that is part of the New Brighton Exchange redevelopment project. The luxury apartments at The View are scheduled to open in July.
