Wheat Ridge Retail Center Powering Through Loss of Anchor

The new 210-acre Wheat Ridge retail development has taken quite a blow recently with anchor store Cabela’s announcing its retirement from the project. Despite this bit of news the Clear Creek Crossing retail center is still set for development as local officials have confirmed for the Denver Business Journal. Cabela’s motivated the move by claiming the current focus of the company is now a smaller store format, a policy that contrasts heavily with the former more expansive destination-type layout. However, the departure will not deal a killing blow to the project as a statement issued by the city of Wheat Ridge quoted by DBJ mentioned the project will continue as planned.
The development will benefit from the presence of a 178,000 square-foot Walmart Super Center which makes the loss of Cabela’s seem a little less depressing. In addition to that, the city has locked a deal with an affiliate of developer THF Realty Inc. to begin developing the non-anchor sections of the center. Wheat Ridge recently received a $3 million federal grant which it has to use in funding improvements to the interchange at 32nd and Youngfield. That operation is set to take action next spring, according to local officials. Cabela’s is leaving behind site improvement work as well as a tunnel under the I-70 and a flyover ramp from Colorado 58 to I-70, according to DBJ.
The International Council of Shopping Centers’ Idea Exchange conference was held downtown, and some small bits of news emerged regarding Denver’s culinary future. A Mongolian stir-fry restaurant—Genghis Grill—is set to be opened in the vicinity of Park Meadows mall, specifically at 9617 E. County Line Road. The restaurant will be part of an already impressive 71-unit chain, located mainly in the southern and western regions of the United States. The concept of the restaurants is to provide a fun, interactive experience according to the chain’s website quoted by The Denver Business Journal.
