What New Senior Development is Borrowing from Hospitality Industry

Bluffton, S.C.—Medical Development Corp. is developing a 74,000-square-foot Canterfield Senior Living facility in Bluffton, S.C.
Winter Construction is building the three-story facility, which is the first phase of the new, cost-efficient Canterfield community in Bluffton. It will also build similar facilities in Kennesaw, Ga., and Franklin, Tenn.
Architecture firm Corcoran Ota Group designed the Canterfield model with construction pricing efficiency in mind.
“Winter Construction is excited to team up with the Medical Development Corporation and the Corcoran Ota Group to build a top-notch facility that will improve lives and enhance the Bluffton community,” said Bo Gray, Winter’s on-site superintendent.
Borrowing from its hotel and restaurant experience, MDC launched the Canterfield luxury senior living brand in 2011, and utilizes both the continuum of healthcare and the services and amenities of the hospitality industry. Canterfield facilities also allow the resident to age in place, a benefit many communities do not offer, while satisfying each individual’s needs and desires in a country club-like setting.
According to a representative from the company, “Canterfield offers a ‘neighborhood’ concept with different wings that offer higher levels of care by separating patients based upon need. In the Canterfield model, there is a higher acuity wing on the first floor as well as a secured memory care section. As the residents age, they can stay in Canterfield as their needs change, while the wing arrangement continues to attract new residents.”
Bluffton, and the surrounding Lowcountry region, is known for its growing retirement communities, lower cost of living, and charming and historic settings. Hilton Head Island is just 19 miles from Canterfield of Bluffton.
According to Gray, Canterfield Senior Living will add a unique luxury facility to the retirement community of the region.
The facility is expected to be completed in fall of 2016.
