Columbia, S.C.—The Beach Co. recently announced the beginning of construction on Sola Station, a 339-unit multifamily community in downtown Columbia, S.C. This will be the final step in completing the new CanalSide neighborhood. Plans for the site also include 29,000 square feet of commercial space and will cost about $58 million, according to the Columbia Business Report.
Named after the 19th-century railroad station that used to connect the port of Charleston to the state’s inland regions, Sola Station is adjacent to the existing CanalSide Lofts, also developed by the Charleston-based firm. The development is just blocks from Huger Street and Gervais Street, two of Columbia’s major arteries, and minutes from the I-26.
Sola Station will be a mixed-use community located in Columbia’s top arts and entertainment district, The Vista. The new property will feature views of the Congaree River and provide easy access to both Three Rivers Greenway and downtown Columbia nightlife. Residents will benefit from amenities such as a saltwater pool, fitness center and yoga studio, dog park and spa, bike shop and clubroom. Four of the buildings will be three stories, another will be five and a final building will be four.
“The Beach Co. continues to remain focused on upscale apartment living in desirable downtown neighborhoods across the Southeast. From the well-established CanalSide Lofts in Columbia to Main and Stone in Greenville, there is an undeniable preference for apartment living in walking distance to work and entertainment,” said John Darby, CEO of The Beach Co., in prepared remarks.
For more than a century, the site was occupied by the Central Correctional Institution. The prison closed in 2004, and the property was sold to the City of Columbia for $3.2 million. The CanalSide complex first opened in 2008. A second phase of the apartment complex was completed in 2013.
The consultant team at Sola Station includes JHP Architecture, Creative Builders Inc., Alliance Consulting Engineers Inc., Hodgson & Douglas LLC and Moore Design Group. Construction financing is provided by U.S. Bank National Association.
