Senior Community Coming to Calgary University District

West Campus Development Trust has partnered with The Brenda Strafford Foundation to develop Cambridge Manor, a 240-unit continuum care community within Calgary’s University District. The 217,000-square-foot building will break ground in early 2018 and is set to open in 2020.
“With Alberta’s senior population expected to reach one in five by 2031, Cambridge Manor will help address associated challenges,” said Mike Conroy, The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s president & CEO, in prepared remarks. “Our assisted living and long-term care units include specialized dementia care. Furthermore, independent-senior living in an adjacent condominium development means seniors—depending on their health care or lifestyle needs—can age in place and live comfortably without having to relocate.”
Cambridge Manor is part of Calgary’s University District, a 200-acre, master-planned sustainable community west of the University of Calgary, developed by West Campus Development Trust. With walkability at the forefront of its design, the community offers interconnecting paths, pedestrian-friendly streets with easy crossings and direct public transportation access. The development is 30 minutes from Calgary International Airport and in the immediate vicinity of the University of Calgary, University Outdoor Centre, Alberta Children’s Hospital, Foothills Medical Centre, Foothills Athletic Park and Olympic Oval.
The community will integrate the residential and academic communities within the University District and neighboring University of Calgary. Researchers and students across various faculties will have access to the dynamic research and learning environment within a continuing care setting at Cambridge Manor, enhanced by collaboration with the university’s Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging. The center has a mandate for age-related research, interdisciplinary education, public policy and community outreach that will benefit the greater community.
University District achieved land use designation in September 2014, and stripping and grading started in the summer of 2015. Living options include The Ivy, 127 townhomes by Brookfield Residential and Noble by Truman, a collection of one- and two-bedroom condos suites and townhomes.
