Ryan Cos. has been awarded the parking ramp and skyway construction contract for the $975 million multipurpose Viking’s stadium that will replace the Metrodome. The announcement was made by The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, which mentioned that the stadium legislation calls for 2,000 parking spaces connected by skyway and 500 within one block of the new stadium.
Groundbreaking is planned for the fall of 2014, with completion expected in 2015 and the opening of the new stadium scheduled for 2016. The parking structures will be integrated with Ryan Cos.’s recent proposal for a $400 million development in downtown east that is expected to attract a corporate user and between 5,000 and 6,000 jobs to Minneapolis. The new parking is planned for use by the corporate tenant during the day and for Vikings games and other events in the evenings and on weekends.
“Our objective with the new stadium was not only job creation but economic development,” said Authority Chair Michele Kelm-Helgen. “It’s amazing that we haven’t even broken ground yet, and this new development is bringing jobs and neighborhood investment.”
In other local news, the Minnesota Twins, in partnership with the Twins Community Fund, recently announced that the annual TwinsFest event will take place at Target Field in 2014.
Scheduled to take place between January 24 and 26, the festival will feature brand-new fan experiences that will accentuate Target Field and continue the popular tradition of player autograph and photo sessions.
“We’re excited to bring TwinsFest home to Target Field,” said Twins President Dave St. Peter. “Hosting this at our ballpark gives us a chance to reinvent this great event, providing creative new experiences for our fans in a smaller, more intimate setting. And perhaps most important, the event again promises to raise significant proceeds for the Twins Community Fund and its many worthwhile programs.”
TwinFest was first launched in 1989 and has become a popular annual event for Minnesota fans. The event’s home has been The Metrodome, but Mall of America and the National Sports Center have also hosted it in the past.
