Related Companies’ National Portfolio Goes Smoke-Free
- Jun 17, 2013
New York—Related Companies, a privately owned real estate company, announced that its entire national portfolio is going smoke free. This portfolio contains more than 40,000 luxury, workforce and affordable communities located across the country in 17 states.
“Related is committed to sustainability and the wellness of its residents,” Jeff Brodsky, president of Related Management, tells MHN. “As a company, we are constantly looking for new ways to improve our residents’ quality-of-life, which is why we instituted a smoke-free commitment. There is a high demand for smoke-free housing and we have worked to meet this demand.”
Related has already converted several of its multifamily communities into smoke-free residences, including One Back Bay in Boston; 500 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago; and 1215 Fifth Avenue, Tribeca Green, Tribeca Park, The Lyric, The Sierra and 89 Murray in New York. Beginning this month, as part of Related’s brand promise to “expect more at home,” new residents and guests will be banned from smoking in the apartments and common areas. Additionally, when leases are renewed, where it is legally permitted, the leases will include a smoke-free clause. Related’s new development will also be smoke-free.
So far, the resident reaction to the smoke-free initiative has been a positive one.
“We have had very positive reactions from our residents starting with the successful completion of the pilot program we began in 2009 at Tribeca Green and The Sierra, two New York City buildings in a premier asset class,” Brodsky says. “In addition, over 100 buildings representing approximately 20,000 residences nationwide have had the opportunity to live smoke-free through a phased roll-out and we have had widespread support from our residents.”
