Following completion, the facility earned LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Located at 1109 E. Lake St. in suburban Chicago, the facility is used for food processing, cold storage warehousing and office space and features multiple food processing lines. A subsidiary of Chiquita Brands, LLC, Fresh Express is known for producing prepackaged lettuce and mixed salads. The 30-acre Streamwood facility incorporates a 2,200-ton ammonia-based refrigeration plant and state-of-the-art compressors. The industrial building at 1109 Lake St. was completed in 2013 and renovated by Opus to deliver a state-of-the-art industrial food production facility for Fresh Express. The plant incorporates a variety of environmental features, such as water-efficient landscaping, construction waste management, construction activity pollution prevention, and enhanced refrigerant management. “We’re extremely proud to have met our goal of achieving LEED Silver certification for Fresh Express’ food manufacturing facility and to have delivered a building that will help reduce the environmental impact of operations,” said Jim Caesar, regional vice president of Opus Design Build, LLC. “This project was a perfect fit for Opus’ design-build delivery process as it required a great deal of technical expertise and collaboration to deliver the high-quality new facility on a tight timeline.” Opus Design Build worked as general contractor for the project; Irvine, California-based Ware Malcomb served as architect of record; TGRWA Structural Engineers and Spaceco Inc. acted as engineers.
