Boston-based hospitality Sonesta International Hotels, which operates nearly 30 luxury hotels catering to premium business and leisure travelers, will open its first hotel in Pennsylvania on June 18. The new Sonesta Hotel Philadelphia will replace the existing Crowne Plaza Philadelphia Downtown, the only hotel to be found on Market Street west of City Hall.

Conveniently located on Rittenhouse Square and within walking distance of the city’s business and cultural core, the new Sonesta hotel will include 445 luxury guest rooms featuring high speed wireless Internet access and spectacular views of Downtown Philadelphia, a 24-hour fitness center, a roof-top swimming pool with panoramic views of the city, a 24-hour business center, and a full-service restaurant offering locally inspired cuisine. Business travelers will have access to a total of 16,000 square feet of meeting space equipped with state-of-the art audio and video systems and unlimited wireless Internet access in all meeting rooms.

Work on another high-end Philadelphia hotel is set to start in 2013 with a completion date scheduled for April 2014, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The W Hotel will operate under the Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. signature and will be located at 1441 Chestnut Street on the former site of One Meridian Plaza, an office building that caught fire in 1991. The site was then turned into a parking lot until The Residences at the Ritz Carlton occupied one half in 2009, while the other half (pictured) was kept as surface parking, according to information from NakedPhilly.com. Further details, such as financing for this project and the number of rooms, are yet to be revealed.
