A new mixed-use project from The JBG Cos. will take the revitalization of the District’s Shaw neighborhood another step further. Called 13|U, the project will create new market-rate and affordable housing units, as well as retail and parking spaces, near the U Street/Cardozo Metro station.

Chevy Chase-based JBG has hired Balfour Beatty Construction, the U.S. subsidiary of London-based Balfour Beatty plc, to build this latest project in the U Street corridor. The general contractor started work in June with the demolition of the existing building on the site at 1300 U St., N.W.

13|U is Balfour Beatty’s fourth building for JBG in the U Street corridor. The company recently completed The Hatton and The Shay mixed-use developments, and turned over The Louis at 14th and U in 2014. In a prepared statement, Balfour Beatty said that it will use the latest technologies and Lean construction methods in the building of 13|U.

JBG did not reveal the cost of the project or a timeline for construction. Once completed, 13|U will bring 129 residential units, 15,750 square feet of retail and 48 below-grade parking spaces to the area.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was present at the groundbreaking ceremony on July 8, together with several other business and civic leaders. “This development will strengthen this vibrant neighborhood by creating more affordable housing for D.C. residents and by offering more job opportunities for our talented workforce,” she said of the project.
