Meet The Beacon: 2020 MHN Excellence Gold Winner, ‘Affordable Development & Design’
- Feb 01, 2021
The Beacon in Long Beach, Calif., is a two-building multifamily community offering an aggregate 160 units of permanent and supportive housing. At the five-story Beacon Place and the seven-story Beacon Pointe, residences are available to formerly homeless and/or disabled veterans, as well as formerly homeless and low-income seniors. Together, The Beacon, Beacon Place and Beacon Pointe provide a focused beam of hope for the homeless and a gateway to downtown Long Beach.
The entrance to The Beacon resembles the bow of a ship, a nod to Long Beach’s long naval history and the project’s goal of self-improvement for residents through a variety of services such as intensive case management offered by the Veterans Affairs’ Long Beach Healthcare System and Mental Health America of Los Angeles. The LEED Gold-certified property also features media rooms, a computer lab, a library, a fitness facility, and a standalone community room with a grilling area and lavishly landscaped courtyard. According to the Long Beach Homeless Count, The Beacon’s residences have reduced local veteran homelessness and senior homelessness by 12.5 percent and 27.1 percent, respectively.
