Barnegat, N.J.—Walters Group has opened the first eight-unit building of Whispering Hills Apartments, an affordable rental property in Barnegat, N.J. When complete, the entire project will consist of seven low-rise buildings featuring one-, two- and three-bedroom units.
A spokeswoman for Walters Group tells MHN that Hurricane Sandy didn’t damage the property, which is on the Jersey shore in relative close proximity to areas affected by the storm. Barnegat is a coastal community, bordered on the east by Barnegat Bay and separated from the Atlantic Ocean by Long Beach Island.
Whispering Hills Apartments will be completed by January. Individuals and families with incomes no higher than 60 percent of the Ocean County area median income for households are eligible to become tenants.
The property’s onsite amenities include a tot-lot playground and a recreational field. The community is also adjacent to the Barnegat leg of Ocean County’s Rails to Trails walking trails. The Barnegat Branch Trail is a 15.6-mile linear rail-to-trail project extending from Barnegat Township to Toms River Township.
Whispering Hills Apartments is designed to meet both LEED and Energy Star certification. Each unit will be equipped with Energy Star-rated appliances designed to help residents save as much as 30 percent on energy usage.
