IMS Gear is expanding its 14-year presence in Virginia Beach. On Friday, Oct. 3, the German automotive gear manufacturer dedicated its newest manufacturing facility in the area.

Located at 489 Progress Lane, the 112,000-square-foot facility is three times the size of its predecessor. According to company officials, IMS Gear looked at several locations before deciding to remain in Virginia Beach.

Guenter Weissenseel, president of IMS Gear Virginia Inc., said that the community and the availability of skilled workers weighed heavily in the company’s decision. IMS Gear worked together with the Virginia Beach Economic Development Department to find the location.

“We have earned 65 percent of the U.S. automotive gear market,” Weissenseel said in a statement. “Our business has multiplied five times in the last five years in Virginia Beach in both production numbers and revenue. We started producing more than one million gears per month last fall and have created more than 150 new jobs to support this growth.”

“IMS Gear is a perfect example of how global manufacturers are finding success in the U.S.,” Warren Harris, director of the Virginia Beach Economic Development, added. “It started with strategically locating to an area offering a quality workforce and a logistics network that effectively connects them to their customers. By then understanding how new technologies can improve their processes, IMS Gear created a successful business model that provides cost-effective products meeting the stringent quality demands of the marketplace.”

Headquartered in Donaueschingen in Germany’s Black Forest region, IMS Gear company opened its first Virginia Beach location in 2000. The firm was founded by Johan Morat in 1863 as a manufacturer of precision instruments for the clock and watch industry. Maximilian Zimber-Morat, great-grandson of the company’s founder and its majority shareholder, attended the dedication. IMS Gear now operates 10 manufacturing facilities, including six in Germany, one in Mexico and one in China, as well in Virginia Beach and its other U.S. location in Gainesville, Ga.
