The San Diego medical care sector is buzzing once again as the Grossmont Healthcare District plans to break ground on several projects worth $240.8 million at the Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa next year and Kaiser Permanente announces plans to build a new 350-bed hospital in Kearny Mesa, according to the San Diego Business Journal.

The price tag for the projects planned by Grossmont Healthcare District is $6.2 million under the $247 million in bonds approved by East County voters in 2006. The 536-bed hospital is operated, under a 30-year lease with the district, by Sharp HealthCare.

Plans include a new 86,330-square-foot Heart and Vascular Center that will cost $60.4 million. The funds will come from Proposition G, the 2006 bond measure. District officials estimate the construction will cost $42.8 million, equipment costs will be around $1 million and the administrative costs approximately $6 million.

On December 14 the district will open bids for the renovation of the 153,000-square-foot East Tower which will cost $44.2 million.

The not-for-profit health plan organization Kaiser Permanente announced that it will build a new acute-care hospital on a 19-acre property located in Kearny Mesa at 5201 Ruffin Road. The site is currently home to various county offices including the San Diego County Registrar of Voters which will probably relocate to one of the county administration buildings on Overland Avenue by the end of 2013.

Kaiser is planning to start the entitlement process for the property straight away and plans to open the new hospital in 2018.
