A change is in store for the Hollywood skyline as CIM Group starts construction of the Sunset Gordon, a 22-story mixed-use tower. Located at the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and Gordon St., the project will feature 301 residential units, 39,538 square feet of office space, 13,056 square feet of ground floor retail and 543 parking spaces. Completion is scheduled for early 2014.

The construction kickoff represents a turnaround for a site where redevelopment has stalled for many years. Objections from the local historic preservation community helped to scuttle a previous proposal by Gerding Edlen, which had proposed to demolish a 1920s building on the site in order to develop a tower, the Los Angeles Business Journal reported. Gerding Edlen eventually defaulted on a loan after litigation tied up the project.

CIM acquired the site last year, and in December promised preservationists that it would incorporate historic elements of the demolished building, including timber trusses and a fireplace mantel, the Business Journal added. In addition, the exterior design will recreate the appearance of the building’s original Spanish-style façade.
