It’s been an average week for Phoenix real estate news, as there was no major development news or massive deal discussed in the press dedicated to the sector, but that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t anything to talk about.

Being the baseball destination that it is, Mesa was bound to start flexing its development muscles when it comes to real estate for the national pastime. And indeed the area has started throwing a couple of fastballs in choosing the contractor and architect for a new spring training facility for the Chicago Cubs. The project is valued at $84 million and will provide the team with a stadium and several practice fields. It is expected to break ground late this year or early 2012 with completion scheduled in time for the 2014 spring training season.

A Phoenix Business Journal report on the selection process noted the merits of general contractor Hunt Construction Group and architecture firm Populous and their experience in the building of sports venues and spring training facilities. The site for the facility is the Riverview Golf Course in Mesa which has access from 8th Street on one side and Dobson Road on the other.

In residential news, the luxury market continues to heat up. According to a Phoenix Business Journal story, a Gray Development LLC project has surfaced in Scottsdale. The development, which will create 749 luxury apartments on a recently bought 4.3 acre site in downtown, will include a grocery store and a rooftop restaurant. Construction is set to begin next year, with the first phase opening in 2013.
