Cherokee Nation to Develop $170M Casino/Hotel/Retail Project in Tahlequah; Miller-Valentine Plans Affordable Housing Project in Spencer

The Reserve at Spencer, an affordable apartment home community located at 8341 NE 36th St. in Spencer, Oklahoma was recently announced by the Miller-Valentine Group and St. Mary Development Corporation.

The Cherokee Nation recently announced plans to develop a $170 million retail and hospitality project in Tahlequah. In 2012, the tribe purchased the Cherry Springs Golf Course and 155 acres of adjacent land. Cherokee Springs Plaza will adjoin the golf course and incorporate it into a 1.3 million square foot mixed-use project.

Cherokee Springs Plaza will take shape in three phases. First on the agenda is building the necessary infrastructure. Next will be development of the Cherokee Casino Tahlequah tself, which will include a hotel, convention center and new golf course. That will be followed by the creation of a retail strip center on Grand Boulevard.

“This project allows us to enhance tourism and economic development for the Cherokee Nation and the city of Tahlequah,” explained Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Bill John Baker. “This development will create hundreds of new jobs for Cherokees and give us the opportunity to convert the existing casino into a bigger and better immersion school for our Cherokee youth.”

The Reserve at Spencer

In multi-family news, Miller-Valentine Group and St. Mary Development Corp. recently detailed plans for the Reserve at Spencer, an 54-unit affordable housing community.

Located at 8341 NE 36th St. in Spencer, The Reserve will comprise 48 two- and three-bedroom apartment homes and six three-bedroom villas with attached garages, located East of McCoy Drive and South of NE 36th St. The pet-friendly community will feature a fitness center, clothes care center, gaming room, business center, multi-purpose community room and a fully-equipped gourmet kitchen.

Additionally, residents will have access to new energy-efficient appliances, washer and dryer, ample closet space, central air conditioning and private patios or balconies. Community amenities include a playground, gazebo and picnic area.

“The Reserve at Spencer allows Miller-Valentine Group to provide outstanding, brand new homes to an area that needs them,” says Brian McGeady, partner and president of Miller-Valentine Affordable Housing Development. “We are enthusiastic and privileged to serve the City of Spencer and to prove to them that our passion is to positively impact their lives.”

Applications will be accepted starting next March, and the property is scheduled to open in summer 2015.
