The George Mason University in Fairfax is growing and looking to become an active 24/7 campus. To help meet the continuing demand for undergraduate housing, the university has selected Balfour Beatty Construction to lead the design-build team for a new student housing facility, Shenandoah Housing VIIIB, also called Taylor Hall. Balfour Beatty Construction has worked on three other projects for the university, including the construction of another housing facility.
The Shenandoah Housing project calls for the construction of a 68,500-square-foot facility adjacent to the Shenandoah dining hall, in the Shenandoah neighborhood, on the university’s Fairfax campus. The residence hall will house 295 students, all freshmen. It will feature hall bath facilities, study and social lounges on each floor, and a ground-floor multipurpose room with a lounge and laundry facilities. Students will also enjoy an outdoor plaza with bench seating, tables, bike racks and WiFi. According to the university’s website, the total budget for the project is $18.8 million.
Balfour Beatty is working on the project with Gensler, a global design, architecture, planning and consulting firm. The design-build team also includes Thornton Tomasetti as structural engineer; Encon Group as MEP engineer; Paciulli, Simmons and Associates as civil and environmental engineer; LSG Landscape Architecture as landscape architect; and GeoConcepts Engineering as geotechnical engineer. The new building is expected to be completed by July 2014.
At the end of August, George Mason University also announced the start of construction on Shenandoah Dining, Ike’s Diner. The 384-seat dining facility will be ready for use by August 2014. The total budget for the project is $10.7 million.
