By Erika Schnitzer, Associate EditorLos Angeles—The winners of the 38th Annual Los Angeles Architecture Awards will be announced on June 19 at the Beverly Hilton International Ballroom in Beverly Hills. The Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) will recognize 30 project teams in 16 architectural and building categories, including Green Building, Housing and Mixed-Use.The Green Building Award will be awarded for the first time this year in three categories: Built, Unbuilt and Design Concept. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will announce the Green Building Award winners.“The vast majority of our members are architects, contractors and owners who felt very comfortable with establishing LEED as a standard for new buildings in LA and recognizing that it’s becoming a national standard that most have used all over the country and the world,” says Mary Leslie, president of LABC. “The mayor was an appropriate choice for presenting the Green Building Award, having led the charge for the new green building ordinance.”The event’s keynote speaker is Jean Nouvel, recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Architecture Prize. “One of his most interesting works is a low-income multifamily project,” says Leslie. “We are very excited about that because it demonstrates that you can build very attractive low-income housing.”All submitted projects must be located with Los Angeles Country and, for the built categories, must have been completed by Dec. 31, 2007. The award recognizes the entire project team, including the architects, contractors and developers. The 15-member jury is comprised of architects, contractors and owners who decide the winners based on outstanding design elements and the significance of the project to the community, explains Leslie.
