Luxury Apartment First in Jersey City to Earn LEED Certification

Jersey City, N.J.—Jersey City is starting to go green. This fall leasing will open for Madox, an apartment community that will be the first to earn LEED certification for a residential building in Jersey City, N.J.
Madox, a seven-story building being developed by Fields Development Group, will feature studios and one- and two-bedroom units with in-unit washers and dryers, hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and designer lighting and fixtures. It will also offer retail space and a landscaped outdoor space. Amenities will include a keyless entry system, 24-hour doorman, gym, lobby lounge with a library, business center, a lounge with children’s play area, yoga room and kitchenette.
But the main appeal will be how environmentally sound the building is.
“The ‘green’ element at Madox is more than just a bonus, and we expect it to play an important role as more and more renters want to live in neighborhoods developed responsibly and with the sensitivity of the surrounding environment in mind,” James Caulfield, Jr., principal of Fields Development Group tells MHN.
The building is being designed for LEED Silver Certification, and will be built with sustainable materials. Other green elements include a PV Solar Array and vegetation on the roof, electric car charging stations, and systems to reduce water consumption by more than 45 percent and energy consumption by 14 percent. The building will also be under contract for at least two years to provide 35 percent of its electricity from renewable sources.
In addition to being green, Madox will be 100 percent smoke free. It will be the first apartment building in New Jersey to have this policy.
“While we just began to take names from those wanting first preference at the building, we’ve already fielded a number of inquiries from potential residents citing its eco-friendly orientation as a reason for their strong interest,” Caulfield says. “We also believe the decision to introduce Madox as one of the only 100 percent smoke-free rental offerings in the state will be embraced by a growing segment of the public that seeks a healthier lifestyle at home.”
