Editor’s Note: Making Connections

The MHN team kicked off the celebration season early, on September 24, with our annual awards ceremony and cocktail party recognizing the winners of the 2012 Excellence Awards. Congratulations again to all the winners—they have been featured in the October issue of MHN magazine. We also thank our event sponsors Interface and Carnegie. We were pleased to partner with these founding members of the green building movement. The importance of offering eco-friendly living spaces for today’s apartment consumer—and the evidence that some renters will pay more to live in a healthier environment—has now been substantiated by research from a variety of sources.

It’s hard to believe the holidays are upon us once again. This festive season affords so many opportunities for apartment communities to bond with residents and forge lasting relationships. If your organization has a creative resident retention story having to do with the holidays, please share it with us. We’ll publish it in the next issue.

The importance of offering eco-friendly living spaces for today’s apartment consumer—and the evidence that some renters will pay more to live in a healthier environment—has now been substantiated by research from a variety of sources. But providing these green living spaces isn’t always as easy as it seems. In this month’s Green Beat Contributing Editor Barbra Murray delves into some of the complications that can arise when selecting green products for renovation or new construction.

The term “green” has become as ubiquitous as the term “luxury.” Since today’s eco-conscious renters are savvier than ever before, it pays to proceed carefully when selecting materials, finishes and furniture for common areas and apartment units. Research these choices carefully and don’t pretend your community is more green than it really is.

Green initiative—rather than perfection—is the key to making connections with today’s eco-conscious renters.
