P.B. Bell, Davis Enterprises Tapped to Redevelop Barrister Place Building in Phoenix

The building, which opened in 1915 as the Jefferson Hotel and had a cameo appearance in the opening scene of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho, will undergo an adaptive reuse renovation along with two adjacent parcels that will create a boutique mixed-use community. The plans will focus on preserving the original façade features of Barrister Place, while upgrading the interior and creating a contemporary feel for the supplemental development.
“The Barrister building is an iconic piece of downtown Phoenix history and we are honored to be involved in helping write its next chapter,” says Mike Trueman, vice president of development for P.B. Bell Companies.
Once touted as the state’s tallest building, the six-story, concrete-and brick Barrister Place building was acquired by the City of Phoenix in 1990 and was used as an office building and site for the Phoenix Police Museum before those venues were moved and it was closed in 2010.
The developers, both long-time family-owned companies that have extensive experience in the Phoenix community, will be working with notable architect Logan Van Sittert on the project, as well as Circle West Architects of Phoenix. P.B. Bell, founded in 1976, has emerged as a leader in multifamily acquisitions, development and property management, and Davis Enterprises has been investing and developing retail and office space in the state since 1948.

Once completed, P.B.
