New Low-Income Seniors Housing Project Planned for Staten Island
By Eugene Gilligan, Contributing Writer
Staten Island, N.Y.–Government officials, a not-for-profit group, and a Staten Island-based developer recently announced plans for a new housing project that will consist of 39 one-bedroom units for financially needy senior citizens.
The six-story building will be located in the St. George section of Staten Island, with construction slated to begin this month, and scheduled for completion in Spring, 2011.
The apartments are targeted to serve the elderly population, 62 years and over that is in need of affordable housing, says R. Randy Lee, CEO of Leewood Real Estate Group, one of the co-developers of the project. Tax credit rents will average from $750 to $800 per unit, but since the property will receive project-based Section 8 funding from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development, rents will fall more in the $100 to $150 a month range, so seniors who may have held low-paying jobs throughout their working lives, and are living on social security, will find the apartments within their means, Lee says.
Victory Fielder Housing Development Fund Corp. is Leewood’s development partner. The Staten Island Borough President’s office also provided a $1.5 million grant. The project has also received Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits, with WNC & Associates as the equity investor. Northfield Bank, a Staten Island-based community bank, provided the construction financing.
The units will have full GE kitchens, and will be outfitted with energy-efficient Low-E glass windows. The building will feature an onsite laundry area, program space, and a local service provider, Community Agency for Senior Citizens, will have an office onsite.
“The Staten Island Ferry is close by, as well as a number of stores,” Lee says.

I am writing on behalf of my 84 year old Aunt… she is in healthy condition, self sufficient. She just lost her son and has no place to live, she is currently sleeping on a friends couch.
Please put her on the list for this housing. She is low income. Thank you.

Which aunt is this ? I know mom,Kay Marotta, had brothers, but no sisters. I am not sure if your father had a sister either.H e around 88 and your mom 85. She was recently in the hospital, and I hope on therpad to recovery and coming home soon. S.I.U.H. said her condition is now good.I remember your grandmother from Boro Park in Brooklyn (Nanny Marotta), and know she died young, only in her 60′s. Your grandfather lived much longer and lived with you on Ionia Ave.a while, too. Why is your 84 year old aunt living with a friend on the couch when she can move with you ? Where is that useless, lazy jerk your twin Michael ? He is so lazy, ambitionless and ignorant !Is he on disability and lounding around the “flop-house” on Ionia Ave.doing nothing all day ?Kick his fat ass out and move your dear elderly aunt in….DO IT !!!

NOW…NOW…just live and let live. We all have our problems and issues. Just let your elderly aunt move in with you if she has no other place to go.If you do something good for someone…it comes bank. KARMA is real and works in mysterious ways. Especially if this is your blood-relative. You have a big paid-off house there. Surely yu can find room to house an elderly aunt that you love. In articular since her son passed away, she neds empathy and love from all that can provide it !

I am a 66 year old lady, I have family in Brooklyn and Staten Island but no one has room for me, I am low income recieving social security retirement benefits. I am a good, clean, quiet person just looking for a clean peaceful new apartment, and this Staten Island low income senior apt complex looks nice. Please e mail me some information, and if I can apply. I am currently living with my wonderful daughter, but she fears her landlord will raise her rent or ask her to leave because I have been with her a while, and the lease is in her name. Thankyou .
