A large retail development in Clarksburg, Md., has taken another important step toward becoming a reality. On Feb. 4, the Montgomery County Council voted almost unanimously to support the development of Clarksburg Premium Outlets at Cabin Branch. It will be the county’s first fashion outlet center. Eight council members voted for the project, while one abstained.
Having received the zoning approval, Simon Property Group Inc., Streetscape Partners and New England Development, the project’s development team, now plan to proceed with turning the vacant Adventist Health Care property off of Interstate 270 into an attractive and pedestrian-friendly shopping and dining destination with 484,000 square feet of retail space. The team expects to open Clarksburg Premium Outlets by late 2015.
“We are very confident that Clarksburg Premium Outlets will be a positive addition to Clarksburg and Montgomery County,” said John Klein, president of Simon’s Premium Outlets division, in a statement for the press. “Clarksburg Premium Outlets will not only provide those residents with the retail they have wanted for so long but will also generate more than 1,500 full- and part-time jobs. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from area residents and look forward to becoming an integral part of the community.”
Besides the 1,500 jobs, the project will also add more than $150 million in private investment to the local economy. It will create 500 construction jobs, according to the Clarksburg Premium Outlets at Cabin Branch website, and will provide $2 million annually in real estate taxes and $12 million in sales revenue. The project also includes an investment of $15 million in I-270 interchange and Route 121 improvements currently underway.
Clarksburg Premium Outlets at Cabin Branch will feature an outdoor green amphitheater and landscaped promenades. It will be home to upscale outlet shopping, as well as a mix of family-friendly dining options, and is expected to re-energize the region.
