Roxul Breaks Ground on $160M Manufacturing Facility

By Eliza Theiss, Associate Editor

The Canadian company Roxul Inc. has officially broken ground on its first United States manufacturing facility. Located in Byhalia, Miss. the 600,000-square-foot location is estimated to cost $160 million dollars, of which almost $150 million will be funded by the corporation, according to The Memphis Daily News.

$12 million more in incentives were provided by the State of Mississippi, as the project is expected to have a significant economic impact in the area – initially 150 new jobs will be created. Though incentives were provided by Mississippi and not Tennessee, the site’s proximity to Memphis and it’s major logistics hub status were the key decision factors in the site’s selection. Some of the incentives included workforce training, site preparation and road improvement and were secured from various sources such as federal economic development funds.

The facility, located on a 110-acre site in Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park, will handle manufacturing, packaging and shipping of stone wool insulation, a product manufactured from natural stone and recycle materials. The facility will implement several green features, such as recycling production waste. Water consumption will also be heavily reduced by recycling process water as well as collecting and using storm water.

Though work on the site has been underway since earlier this spring, the official groundbreaking marked the joint celebration of local and state officials, as well executives from the Milton, Canada-based Roxul and its parent company Rockwool International. Production at the facility is expected to start in 2014.

Other tenants at the 3,600-acre Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park include EXEL, which will occupy a 750,000-square-foot distribution center, and ASICS American Corp., with a 500,000-square-foot distribution center.
