Design Team Selected for The Paseo Del Norte/I-25 Interchange Reconstruction Project
By Anca Gagiuc, Associate Editor
A reconstruction project meant to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety and air quality has selected its design team. The corridor is the Paseo Del Norte/I-25 Interchange, which has been allocated $75 million to $93 million and an additional $18 million for the preliminary design and acquisition of rights and fees.
The chosen design-build team is Kiewit New Mexico/Bohannan Huston Inc./Terracon. The team’s management plan states the maximum guaranteed price will not be exceeded. Contract negotiations and the completion of the project design are planned for finalization this month. In early September notice to continue work outside the primary construction zone is expected. The construction will begin in October, after the 2013 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and is scheduled to be completed in less than two years.
Improvements include a free-flow ramp from eastbound Paseo del Norte to southbound I-25 to ease the traffic during rush hours; a flyover ramp for the northbound I-25 to westbound Paseo Del Norte to support the traffic in the afternoon hours; and an overpass at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Paseo Del Norte for the local traffic flow and the access from east to west. Bicycle and pedestrian access is taken into account, connecting existing paths in the area. Access on the freeway for the traffic coming from east of Paseo del Norte/I-25 interchange will also be improved as the I-25 mainline between Alameda Boulevard and Jefferson Street.
Financing consists of: $50 million from the city of Albuquerque, $29.75 million from the state, $5 million from Bernalillo County, and $8.25 million from federal funding sources.
The project will bring 3,000 new jobs over the next 20 years and fuel savings for the area of around $2.5 million per year within the next 20 years, as stated in a release from the Mayor’s office.
